Fenugreek Synopsis 2022
For having a ground level experience of cultivating a rabi crop i chose Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum). It being an annual herb is mainly cultivated for seed as well as for its leaves (fresh or dried). The seeds are used as spices and condiments to improve the flavor and the nutritive value of foods.
We were alloted plots of 5m x 6m.Field was having hard pan and was full of weeds and clods.
The soil was pulverised and ploughed manually with spade two to three times each time followed by planking to get a fine tilth.
For ensuring high yield without using any kind of synthetic supplements.
We evenly applied 45kg of rotten Farm Yard Manure in the field and allowed it to enrich the soil with organic matter.
I purchased high yielding variety "Co-1" from the local seed market. This variety is very popular in India for its early bunching and maturity period of 95 days.
It's been two days I had applied Farm Yard Manure to the field so now field was ready for sowing.
To sow the seeds I chose ridge and furrow method because this is a cost-efficient method as it minimizes water loss of gravity irrigation system.
100 grams of seeds was sown by evenly broadcasting on furrows.
Subsequently irrigation was applied after sowing.
5 days after sowing seed sprouting was seen.
Irrigation was given subsequently at 7-10 days interval.
For weed control two hand hoeings were given.
Harvesting was done when the lower leaves start to shed. Harvesting date- 18 January 2023.
Yield: Greens- 12 Kg; Grains- 1.5 Kg
